| Selective Broadleaf Weed Killer for Lawns: The Do's And Don'ts Of Proper Application |
DO . . .
-
Carefully read all instructions and precautions on the product package and follow them to the letter.
-
Use concentrate (for its economy and efficiency) if you are treating the entire lawn or a large portion of it, ready-to-use spray for occasional spot treatment of problem areas.
-
Mow the grass just prior to application in order to give the product the maximum amount of time to work before you cut again.
-
Dispense the product from a pump-type pressure sprayer or hose-end spray bottle for increased efficiency and reduced hand strain if treating a large area.
-
For spot-treatments, direct the spray to weeds only.
-
Rinse off flowers, shrubs, etc. that are accidentally sprayed.
-
Spray the product lightly and evenly during application.
-
Apply selective broadleaf weed killer on a sunny day when the air temperature is between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and rain is not in the forecast. Application at temperatures below 65 degrees F will produce slower results, while application in temperatures above 85 degrees F may prove harmful to lawn grasses. If it rains within 24 hours or less of application, reapplication may be necessary.
-
Wait at least 21 days after application before re-seeding treated areas.
DON'T . . .
-
Don't mix concentrated product at a rate higher than the one recommended on the product package or fill your sprayer with more product than is needed to cover the square footage of the treated area. If using a hose-end sprayer, add only enough concentrate to cover the area you intend to treat. Overapplication- whether by applying too much spray or by applying overly concentrated spray- can cause lawn damage.
-
Don't pause or spray heavily in exceptionally weedy areas. Since the product is absorbed into the plant through its foliage, all you need to do is wet it, not douse it. Again, overapplication will not significantly improve the herbicide's performance on weeds, but it may harm lawn grasses.
-
Don't apply more than two full-lawn applications in a year as this may stress grass plants.
-
Don't apply to a newly established lawn until you've mowed the new grass at least three times.
-
Don't use the product in flower gardens or around ornamental shrubs.
-
Don't use products on the Floratam variety of St. Augustine grass unless they specifically are recommended.
-
Don't apply the product on a windy day as it may drift onto desirable plants and shrubs and damage them.
-
Don't compost treated grass clippings.
- Don't allow people or pets on treated areas until the spray has dried completely.
